| Abstract | This monograph discusses the role of the press in reporting the nomination of Senator Thomas Eagleton for Vice President of the United States, the revelation of his hospitalization for mental illness six years prior to the nomination, and his eventual resignation as George McGovern's running mate in the 1972 Presidential elections. Four sections of the booklet consist of a discussion of the nomination, a description of the disclosure of Eagleton's history, an examination of the public reaction, and a review of the resignation based on reports and editorials gleaned from the news media. The final section of this document attempts to place the Eagleton affair in perspective, concluding that most elements of the news media acted responsibly during the controversy. (RB) |
