Abstract	The purposes of this study were to investigate the status of nonfiction in the reading interests of second, third, and fourth graders and to determine the effectiveness of a personal reading record as a measure of reading interests. All students in the second, third, and fourth grades of a middle-class rural area in central New Jersey served as subjects in this study. Students were asked to keep a record of the books that they read in their free time for a period of 3 months. When the sheets were collected, a stratified random sample was taken to provide a population of 120 students, 40 at each of the three grade levels. The percent of nonfiction books read was calculated for each of the reading records of these students. Frequency tables were made for the percentages by grade, sex, and reading ability. A chi-square test for independent samples was used for each of the variables. The results indicated that there was no significant increase in the number of nonfiction books read as the grade increased, but that an average of one-fifth of the books read by each grade was nonfiction. Reading ability was also shown to have no effect on the books read by boys and that read by girls. (WR)
