AbstractThe Children and the Law program was developed to install productive attitudes toward law in fifth graders. Components of the program are a series of six television films entitled Children and the Law; a booklet for students entitled A Look at Law; a Teacher's Guide; Community Guidelines; panel discussions among representatives of the legal professions, uniformed police officers, and layman; and optional components -- teacher workshops and justice tours for students. The student booklet, a workbook, poses real-life situations requiring students to make decisions and express values that carry legal ramifications. The Teacher's Guide includes an overview of the program, understandings expected from a student's use of A Look at Law, background information for teachers, general discussion questions, and suggested activities. Instructions for implementation of the program by local Bar Associations are provided in Community Guidelines, A How-To-Do-It Booklet. The program might also be initiated by interested educators or used as a model for other programs and is not dependent on the film series. (Author/JH)
