Abstract	The author traces the development of career education in the United States since 1900, to counter earlier studies which included only formal education, in assessing human capital input. The book deals mainly with the contribution of nonformal education to economic growth as related to eight types of schooling: apprenticeships, adult education, adult vocational programs, correspondence schools, federal training programs, on-the-job training, private business schools, and special schools. Numerous tables of historical statistics have been included to quantify enrollments since 1900 in these areas of nonformal education. The study is an extension and revision of earlier studies by Edward F. Denison on the relationship of education to economic growth; it is an outgrowth of more than a decade of concern for the neglect of occupational education in the United States. (EA)
