AbstractA pilot study reported in this monograph is part of a larger study that includes data on 5 Southwestern American Indian reservations. Its primary purpose is to provide basic manpower information essential for planning and developing effective services and programs for Laguna Indians. Manpower resource characteristics are presented for age and sex, family characteristics, and educational attainment. Since no accurate records of people residing on the Laguna Reservation were available before this study, a list maintained by the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) was modified to arrive at a sampling frame. The size of the reservation's total working-age human resource was estimated at 1,064 based on the modified BIA list. It is noted that about 47 percent of the Laguna working-age population are in the labor force. Information is presented on sources of income and consumption patterns. The consumption patterns show the reliance of Laguna families on cash to satisfy most of their consumer demands. Recommendations in this area include consumer education, greater employment opportunities, and income maintenance projects. (PS)
