AbstractDuring the summer of 1970, the Institute for Services to Education (ISE) held its fourth annual summer writing conference for faculty members of predominantly black institutions of higher education. The purpose was to continue the process of teacher development of undergraduate curriculum materials and concomitant instructional practices. Attending the 6-week conference were faculty, staff, and graduate students from 23 predominantly black institutions. The conference was divided into units by the curriculum areas, including: English, mathematics, biology, humanities, physical sciences, social institutions, and philosophy. Questionnaires were distributed near the end of the conference to elicit the participant's attitudes toward undergraduate instruction in general, their attitudes and opinions about the quality of materials and procedures developed during the conference, and their feelings about the mechanics of the conference and the quality of the conference staff. This report presents and discusses the responses of a sample (40) of teachers who participated in the conference as members of the original 13 College Program experimental units. The results are presented both by total summaries of responses and by responses according to the teachers' different curriculum areas. Selected summaries are presented by the number of years the teacher had participated in the program, by the teacher's sex, and by the teacher's race. General rating tendencies are also presented.
