| Abstract | The 1970 revised science objectives are presented in this booklet along with a summary of the history and goals of the National Assessment of Educational Progress. Procedures used in reviewing and revising the 1965 version are described in detail. The National Assessment Science objectives are divided into three primary statements describing the behaviors expected to be observable in individuals as they move toward the attainment of scientific literacy: (1) Know the fundamental aspects of science; (2) Understand and apply the fundamental aspects of science in a wide range of problem situations; and (3) Appreciate the knowledge and processes of science, the consequences and limitations of science, and the personal and social relevance of science and technology in our society. Each primary objective is divided into subobjectives that deal with the fundamental aspects of science. Each subobjective is further defined with descriptions of related behaviors which are assessed by age levels. Lists of participants in mail reviews and members of panels are appended.
