AbstractThis document contains a literature review of publications discussing the concept of Black Power. Attention is paid to defining black power from various perspectives. The movement is also discussed as to the extent and demography of its support. A second section of the paper deals with white reactions to the black power movement. This is undertaken longitudinally and regionally. A final section discusses some of the problems endemic to carrying out research in the black community in the light of the changed orientations following in the wake of the black power movement. Throughout the paper, emphasis is laid upon the difficulty of drawing valid conclusions about the movement as a result of the rapid change of the black community. The time required to collect and analyze data is often too long to permit the publication of valid findings. Indicative of this problem is the report itself. There is here virtually no discussion of the Black Panther organization and its effect on the black power movement. This gap, of course, reflects the lack of published data descriptive of this group. Such studies undoubtedly are in progress, but without them, no statement of the black poser movement can be considered as being totally up-to-date. (Author/JM)
