| Abstract | St. Peter, Illinois, a small community with a population of 400, was selected for this sociological study to determine (1) the social structure of a small community, (2) the number of social levels discernible, (3) the reading habits and interests of the inhabitants, (4) the reading achievement of elementary school children, and (5) the relationship, if any, between social class and reading habits, interests, and achievement. Reading habits and interests were assessed through the use of a questionnaire and analyzed by sex, age, grade level, and social class. The reading achievement testing was conducted in the local elementary parochial school (St. Peter's Lutheran Church), and results were also analyzed by grade level, social class, and sex. In general, there tended to be only a very slight relationship between social class and reading habits, interests, and achievement. (Author/HS) |
