Abstract | Report of a pioneer study comparing social and economic impact of illiteracy with that produced by literacy, and identifying trends and necessary modifications in current literacy program in order to increase its effectiveness in economic and social development is presented. Questionnaires were administered through personal interviews in both agricultural and industrial sectors. Results show that literacy can be considered among important variables in measuring change; there is need for educational materials and aids relevant to production in agriculture as well as in industry, and for modification of current literacy programs.
