Abstract | To evaluate and assess vocational education programs in the various institutions of North Carolina, data were collected regarding program and administrator characteristics. With emphasis on high schools and community college programs, the survey led to several conclusions which include: (1) The position of Director of Occupational Education is a widely established position at the administrative level, but the concept of advisory committees for occupational education seems difficult to implement, (2) Superintendents are professionally qualified on the basis of degree and administrative experience but many (43 percent) have had no occupational work experience other than in schools, (3) Inadequate implementation of citizens' advisory committees prevails at the local school level, (4) Supply and equipment are two items of considerable concern to teachers, (5) High school occupational education has an enviable record of student holding power, with less than 10 percent of students as drop-outs, and (6) It appears that the majority of community college students were beginning their vocational programs at the community college level, rather than continuing a career begun in high school.
