Abstract | Previous methods for determining the communication structure of organizations work well for small or simple organizations, but are either inadequate or unwieldy for use with large complex organizations. An improved method uses a number of different measures and a series of successive approximations to order the communication matrix such that people who talk to each other are near each other in the matrix, liaison individuals between groups can be identified, and small groups within the organization separated. By using lists of the contacts of each individuals instead of a full matrix with many blank elements, the structure of a large and complex organization can be determined within a realistic amount of computer time.
