| Abstract | A comprehensive study of youth concert activities in 20 cities, a study undertaken to provide a systematic analysis of representative youth concert operations during the 1966-67 school year is discussed. More than a thousand educators provided data and evaluations of youth concerts as educational experiences. The 20 cities selected for the study represent a cross-section of size, geographic location, extent and nature of youth concert activities, and diverse practices and circumstances. It was found that while variations in youth concert operation are inevitable and desirable, certain practices emerge as fundamental in reaching the main objective theme--giving more young people more opportunities to hear and appreciate live performances of youth concerts. Schools are encouraged to: (1) establish a close working relationship between the orchestra management and the school system's director of music education; (2) Identify specific goals and a timetable for meeting them; (3) Plan fiscal arrangements with both orchestras and schools; (4) Solicit financial support from various possible sources; (5) Provide students with sequential listening experiences; (6) Schedule as many programs as possible during school hours; (7) Provide all students with the opportunity to attend; and (8) Offer appropriate programs of artistic excellence.
