| Abstract | This study examines the determinants of youth labor force participation, school activity, and employment rates. Nearly all the data came from the March 1967 Current Population Survey, both from survey results and from the individual data records collected in the survey. After records were obtained for 104,000 individuals, of whom 14,000 were between 16 and 21 years of age, least squares regressions were used, mainly with dummy variables, to determine the degree of correlation between the variables. The results show that high unemployment rates and low wages encourage high levels of school activity. Poverty tract residence reduces school activity directly while the negative influence of race occurs only after accounting for labor force status. Youth employment rates are not significantly affected by family income or age differences within the 16-21 group, although race continues to be a major factor in employment opportunity even after adjusting for individual and area variables.
