Abstract | The contents of the second edition of this book on "metropolitanism" include: (1) Metropolitan schools and social structure: three schools of the metropolis, social mobility, etc.; (2) Urban and metropolitan development: the city in an essentially rural society, new definitions of metroplis, etc.; (3) Socioeconomic and racial stratification in metropolitan areas: the socioeconomic ratio, effects of socioeconomic and racial stratification and segregation in the schools, etc.; (4) Schools in the metropolitan area: socioeconomic characteristics of schools in the metropolitan area, the urban-community schools, etc.; (5) Suburban schools in the evolving metropolitan area: problems in financing suburban education, and suburban schools in the metropolitan system of education; (6) Urban renewal, metropolitan planning, and the schools: new directions in urban renewal, education in metropolitan development, etc.; (7) Schools and the Black Revolution: urbanization of blacks; equality of opportunity or equality of achievement? etc.; (8) Teachers in metropolitan schools: social origins of metropolitan area teachers, the career line of metropolitan educator, etc.; and (9) School systems and other social systems in the metropolitan area: goals of metropolitan development, social system defined, inter-system cooperation, intra-system functioning, and paths to metropolitanism.
