| Abstract | While accepting the world of technology as necessary and beneficial to the progress of man, the English teacher's role should be to use his subject matter in fostering skills which will further humanize students. By stressing the power of words, by exploring the relationship of language to history and to technology, and by viewing language as a commentary on the human condition, language study can engender in students a love and respect for the word. Composition skills should be presented as a means of expressing reality, hopes, and dreams--not simply as practice in correct usage and grammar. Similarly, rather than picking apart a literary work to the point of dryness or even death, the teacher should emphasize people in literature and the richness of human interaction found in great literary works.
