Abstract	A longitudinal study (1960-1966) investigated the effects of home environment on school achievement. This preliminary report focuses on children who were enrolled in junior kindergarten in 1960. The following year all children enrolled in senior kindergarten became part of the study. The first section of the document outlines data collection procedures using a parent interview questionnaire, and describes items selected for analysis. Pupil scores on one specially developed test and two standardized mental tests were used along with teacher ratings in a multiple regression analysis. The document section concerned with results and discussion answers four questions that guided the study: (1) What nonschool variables are the best predictors of school achievement? (2) Does home environment make more of a difference to scores on an objective standardized test or is it more likely to affect the teacher's judgments of a child? Is socioeconomic status relevant in trying to explain school achievement? and (4) Does IQ make a difference or do actions in the home provide a better explanation of a child's performance?
