Abstract	This study was undertaken to determine whether or not the theater arts play an important role in a large metropolitan area outside of New York. The Milwaukee (Wisconsin) urbanized area was chosen for the study. Another purpose of the study was to determine whether or not there were important facets of theater, besides professional theater, that were important in themselves, and that played an important part in developing a place for the professional arts in communities removed from the present theater capital. Personal interviews were conducted with the leaders of children's theater, high school theater, adult play-reading groups, professional theaters, theater supporting organizations, college and university theater, adult amateur community theaters, theater supporting industries, and the drama critics of the Milwaukee newspapers. It was determined in the study that the theater arts presently do play an important part in community life in a city outside of New York. (Author/PT)
