Abstract | Some museum techniques and methods can be used in fundamental educational programs without elaborate buildings or equipment; exhibitions should be based on valid presumptions and should take into account the "common sense" beliefs of people for whom the exhibit is designed. They can be used profitably in the economic development of local cultural resources, as shown in the revival of pottery manufacture in the American Indian pueblo of San Idlefonso. Exhibitions can be used to aid programs in the basic principles of contemporary science, techniques in agriculture, the development of new industry, as well as the development of public health and literacy. The scope of material which can be used for exhibition purposes is nearly inexhaustible; it should be selected for size and weight for an exhibition for fundamental education purposes should be mobile in order to reach the widest audience. Collections may be acquired by purchase, gifts, or loan; records are essential. In Mysore (India) two exhibitions were conducted by a Unesco team--one on trees and the soil in an area of little rainfall and one on market gardening. They confirmed the opinion of the great value of the audiovisual model boxes and the importance of oral explanations. (EB) |
