Abstract | This action research study describes how the Centre Universitaire de Cooperation Economique et Sociale (CUCES) set up an initial instructor training program for senior engineers in a large French cement firm and eventually progressed toward overall organizational change. Beginning with research methodology and some practical problems encountered in intervention, the report recounts the preparation of engineers as statistics instructors, followed by the orientation of plant managers, extension of statistical training to engineers and managerial personnel, and an engineering job study. The third and fourth stages of intervention are then explained; these were the involvement of sales directors, plant executives, and other top managers in organizational change, accompanied by gradual withdrawal by the CUCES change agent from the change process. Finally, the project is assessed in terms of the use of statistics in the intervention process, as well as the theoretical perspective (largely sociological) provided by the CUCES. Also included are the course outline, two charts, and an extensive bibliography. (LY) |
