Abstract | Written by teachers in the Mid-Prairie Community School District, this revised 1st grade social studies curriculum guide will be tested in the 1970-71 school year and evaluated in the Spring. The units emphasize general communication skills and the building of a background for specific social studies skills: reading social studies material; applying critical thinking to social issues; interpreting maps and globes; and, understanding time and chronology. Educational objectives and developmental understandings were drawn from the Contra Costa Social Studies and the Evanston Township (Illinois) Schools Developmental Understandings of Maps and Globes and Chronology. The five units are: The Schools; The Grocery Store; Transportation; The Post Office; and, The Fireman (optional). They are designed to take the children from an awareness of their immediate environment to a broader understanding of their world. Specific objectives, activities, readings, and AV materials are listed in each unit. Although the units are not interdisciplinary, they are to be alternated with science units. (DJB) |
