Abstract	The study was designed to develop and evaluate a vocationally oriented, family-centered educational program for use by local educators in helping severely disadvantaged rural families overcome the social, economic, and psychological pressures which inhibit their advancement in American society. The chapters are entitled (1) Overview of Project REDY (Rural Education: Disadvantaged Youth), (2) Characteristics of Families Residing in Depressed Rural Areas, (3) Characteristics of Severely Disadvantaged Families, (4) Socioeconomic Aspects of Family Life in a Depressed Rural Area, (5) Educational Program Development for the Rural Disadvantaged, (6) An Educational Program for the Rural Disadvantaged, (7) Evaluation of an Educational Program for the Rural Disadvantaged, (8) Subjective Findings of Project REDY Staff Members, and (9) Summary of Findings, Conclusions and Recommendations. The educational program, developed on the basis of needs of these rural families, was evaluated using a pretest-posttest control group design in which the educational program served as the treatment. Results of the study indicated that families in the educational program exhibited significant improvements in terms of parental desires for their children, occupations and organizations of parents, situation and goals of the children and family, the home and its surroundings, and morale and general adjustment of family members.
