| Abstract | An increasing population, large families, poverty, lack of orientation to urban living, and high mobility rates are all problems related to the influx of Indians into the Minneapolis area. This interim report presents a broad perspective of the efforts of the public school system, the community action programs, and the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis to meet the rapidly increasing and apparent problems of this minority group. Emphasis has been placed on the involvement of parents and Indian community leaders in the creation of advisory councils and in the leadership of educational efforts. It is noted that the Minneapolis Public Schools have created a position entitled Assistant Director of Urban Affairs and Consultant in Indian Affairs, which is a position for an Indian. Also, the University of Minnesota has created a Department of Indian Studies. Information is presented on the dropout problems, parental attitudes, proposed program adjustments, and current exemplary programs. (DK) |
