Abstract | Using questionnaire responses from the wives of Army officers on duty in the United States, this study explored participation in the areas of education, volunteer services, and employment, and the premise that there are certain characteristics of the military environment which might influence and modify that participation. The study focused on wives' educational and career preparation, the use of that preparation in volunteer services and paid employment, and situational and environmental factors (age differences, rank of husband, residential patterns, specific occupations, marital and family status, educational needs, and others) which might be relevant to patterns of participation. The study found that the Army officer's wife was generally well educated (80 per cent had gone beyond high school, and 40 per cent had a bachelor's degree), that there was high interest in further education, volunteer work, and employment, but that various aspects of Army life, most particularly transience, limited the opportunities to follow these interests.
