| Abstract | Results of this study which attempted to determine the main forces which strengthen or weaken college aspirations of students from disadvantaged backgrounds showed that the parents, guidance counselor and teacher were the strongest personal influences. Circumstances more than people tend to lessen the aspirations of the teenagers studied, who were chosen from a college-bound program in New York City. The three chief circumstances were lack of money, fear of failure, and not strong enough motivation. The two main reasons for going to college were relevant to the improvement of their self image and a pragmatic orientation toward a career. Charts are included. (KG) |
