Abstract | The concept of deprivation has become very appealing to specialists of many disciplines as an explanation for deviations in human development. This is understandable, since the phenomenon does seem to be a key factor in development, but several technical and methodological considerations hinder immediate efforts at understanding and alleviating it. Ambiguities in definitions of the concept of deprivation and the necessity to rely on field study research designs constitute major deterrents to the acquisition of definitive data. To determine more clearly the effects of psychosocial deprivation on human development there have to be improved techniques for assessing the psychosocial environment and for standardizing change-sensitive measures of early development. Also, more attention needs to be given to clarifying the relationship between constitutional factors and susceptibility to deprivation. The single case model deserves more use in attempts to demonstrate the effects of the operation and removal of psychosocial deprivation. Finally, psychosocial enrichment might have an optimum level which should be taken into consideration. (Author/MH) |
