Abstract	The articulation of a rationale for Project Africa's instructional program, the collection of materials for improving inquiry-oriented instruction at the secondary level about Africa south of the Sahara, and the preparation of teaching and study guides have been completed. This geographic region, rather than the whole continent, was chosen to allow for an in-depth study of a unique African region, the understanding of which "is vital to any understanding of the African continent." The development of learning materials was based on teaching the student to identify the purpose for inquiry, to build and test a hypothesis, to draw conclusions, and to apply those conclusions to new data. The curriculum was divided into three areas of study: the cultural background of Africans south of the Sahara, the social and economic forces which have affected them in the past, and the impact of modern ideas and technology on the African way of life.
