AbstractThe general reading attainment realized by 44 college-bound senior high school students in a 12-week program was studied. The effects of intelligence, sex, race, high school attended, college board scores, age, college choice, and socioeconomic status on the criterion variables of reading rate, vocabulary, and comprehension were also studied. The Nelson-Denny Reading Test, Forms A and B, was used as pretest and post-test. A controlled reader, tachistoscope, additional rate and comprehension devices, programed and linguistic materials, and various practice materials were used in the program. Significant gains were made in vocabulary and reading rate. Sex, race, socioeconomic status, or school attended did not affect the criterion variables. Initial scores affected all three variables. Gains in comprehension and reading rate were affected by intelligence and total college board scores. The relationship of comprehension gain to college choice approached significance.
