AbstractTo investigate and compare educational and vocational goals of urban youth from rural and non-rural backgrounds, with each other and with their parents and to explore the effect of sex of child, level-of-living, and family size on these goals, 11 schools were randomly selected from predominantly white junior high schools in cities of at least 40,000 population. Questionnaires were administered to 126 9th and 10th grade students and their parents. An analysis of variance of the responses yielded the following major findings: (1) Differences in valuation of education by level of living were not significant, (2) Years of school was related to level of living, (3) Youth with higher level of living communicate better with their fathers regarding educational plans than those with a lower level of living, (4) A larger percentage of boys than girls felt that parents had strongly urged them to continue school, (5) There was close agreement between reality and aspiration in occupational plans, (6) Family size was related to financial help with education, (7) There was no significant difference in the occupational choices according to background of youth, and (8) 60 percent of the fathers held different expectations than those indicated by their children.
