Abstract | A brief critical commentary on several current viewpoints on the teaching of French culture introduces the article which stresses the concept that linguistic behavior and culture are intimately related and emphasizes the necessity of applying this concept in the foreign language classroom. Basic French nouns, pronouns, and phrases are examined to illustrate the language-culture relationship which, it is argued, makes the most commonplace structures "idiomatic." Pedagogical conclusions stemming from this relationship are then enumerated, with emphasis given to the introduction and integration of cultural context into the language classroom according to a systematic progression.
