AbstractOne aspect of Project REDY (Rural Education-Disadvantaged Youth) was to explore the degree of upward social and occupational mobility which society might realiztically expect from residents of a rural economically depressed area. Social class structure was identified as a related factor and examined in a rural, Southern Illinois county. It was found that the sociological phenomenon of class stratification of the economically depressed area studied was characterized as primarily middle, upper-working, and working class. It was concluded that an agrarian economically depressed area generally contained youth and adults who wanted to and would work. However, the majority of the youth and adults tended to select lower status occupations due to local availability and social circumstances. An implication drawn from the study was that full development of economically depressed rural areas will occur when business, industry, and education join forces in a planned, systematic attack on economic and social problems. A bibliography concludes the report. Related documents are RC 002 834 and RC 002 836. (SW)
