Abstract	Identified were characteristics of students who persisted in engineering, transferred to another major, or dropped out of college. Four hundred-thirty freshmen, sophomores, and juniors in the College of Engineering at the University of North Dakota were involved in the study during 1965-66. Data on students included American College Test scores, high school and college grades, high school and college course records, parents' socio-economic and educational levels, and questionnaire responses. A study of academic variables revealed that, in general, students remaining in engineering had higher ACT mathematics scores, higher mean high school grades, higher cumulative grade points, and more mechanical drawing in high school than transfers and dropouts.
