AbstractTHIS PAPER PRESENTS AN APPROACH TO THE VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEM OF HANDLING VALUES IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS, PARTICULARLY IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IT DEALS WITH THE ROLE OF VALUES IN THE SCHOOL CURRICULUM. THE TOPIC IS APPROACHED IN FOUR PROBLEM AREAS, TWO IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF EDUCATION AND TWO IN ITS METHODOLOGY. THE FOUR AREAS ARE--(1) CAN ONE JUSTIFY TRYING TO CHANGE STUDENT VALUES AT ALL, (2) CAN ONE JUSTIFY ONE PARTICULAR SET OF VALUES TOWARDS WHICH ONE SHOULD DIRECT ONE'S STUDENTS, (3) CAN ONE EVER DEMONSTRATE THE OCCURRENCE OF CHANGES IN STUDENT VALUES DUE TO THE EDUCATIONAL FACTOR, AND (4) CAN ONE MEASURE STUDENT VALUES IN ANY IMPORTANT SENSE. THESE PROBLEM AREAS ARE DISCUSSED UNDER SEVEN GENERAL HEADINGS--(1) VALUE-FREE AND VALUE-INVOLVED POSITIONS, (2) VALUE VALIDATION PROCEDURE, (3) PRACTICAL CONSEQUENCES FOR EDUCATION, (4) STUDENT VALUES, (5) MORAL ISSUES, (6) TEACHING VALUES, AND (7) PROBLEMS OF TESTING. IN CONCLUDING, THE AUTHOR SUGGESTS THAT MUCH OF THE EMPIRICAL WORK RAISES DEEP AND IMPORTANT QUESTIONS. SOME ARE IN THE AREAS OF CRITERIA FOR UTILITY OF CONCEPTS WITH NONCORRELATING COMPONENTS, THE COALESCENCE OF ESPOUSED AND ACTUAL VALUES AS AN EDUCATION OBJECTIVE, AND THE SMALL AMOUNT OF KNOWLEDGE ABOUT THE ROLE OF VALUES. TWO OTHER PAPERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE SERIES--(1) "MORALITY" (AA 000 272) AND (2) "VALUE CLAIMS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES" (AA 000 273). THIS PAPER WAS WRITTEN AS PART OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM, A CURRICULUM PROJECT DESIGNED TO OUTLINE THE CONCEPTS, METHODS, AND STRUCTURE OF SEVERAL OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR USE BY TEACHERS AND CURRICULUM WORKERS AT ALL GRADE LEVELS.
