AbstractTHIS POSITION PAPER PRESENTS AN APPROACH TO THE VERY DIFFICULT PROBLEM OF HANDLING VALUES IN THE EDUCATIONAL PROCESS, PARTICULARLY IN THE PUBLIC SCHOOLS. IT DISCUSSES THE FOUNDATIONS OF ETHICS AND THE METHODOLOGICAL BASIS FOR MORAL VALUE JUDGMENTS. THE DISCUSSIONS ARE PRESENTED UNDER THREE GENERAL TOPIC AREAS--(1) "PRELIMINARIES" WHICH COVERS THE PROBLEMS, CONCLUSIONS, MORALITY DISTINGUISHED FROM PRUDENCE, UNSOUND BASES FOR MORALITY, MORAL DISAGREEMENT VERSUS MORAL SKEPTICISM, UNSELFISH BEHAVIOR, PLEASURE OR HAPPINESS, AND THE PARADOX OF JUSTIFYING MORALITY, (2) "BASIC CASE OF MORALITY" WHICH INCLUDES AN EXAMPLE (ARMY DISCIPLINE), A DEFINITION OF THE MORAL COMMUNITY, THE EXPECTANCY ADVANTAGE FOR THE MORAL COMMUNITY, THE PRODUCTIVITY ADVANTAGE FOR THE MORAL COMMUNITY, THE ADAPTABILITY ADVANTAGE FOR THE MORAL COMMUNITY, AND THE MORAL COMPROMISE, AND (3) "CRITICISMS AND REFINEMENTS" WHICH INCLUDES ATTITUDE INERTIA AND SELF-SACRIFICE, ATTITUDE INERTIA AND SOME MORAL PUZZLE-CASES, EVOLUTIONARY ETHICS, FORMULATION AND INTERPRETATION OF MORAL MAXIMS, THE MORAL FRANCHISE, ATTITUDE CONTROL, PARADOXES OF COMMITMENT, AND CONCLUSIONS. TWO OTHER POSITION PAPERS ARE INCLUDED IN THE SERIES--(1) "VALUE CLAIMS IN THE SOCIAL SCIENCES" (AA 000 273) AND (2) "STUDENT VALUES AS EDUCATIONAL OBJECTIVES" (AA 000 274). THIS PAPER WAS WRITTEN AS PART OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM, A CURRICULUM PROJECT DESIGNED TO OUTLINE THE CONCEPTS, METHODS, AND STRUCTURE OF SEVERAL OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR USE BY TEACHERS AND CURRICULUM WORKERS AT ALL GRADE LEVELS.
