Abstract | A SYSTEMATIC, BUT SIMPLIFIED, THEORETICAL FOUNDATION OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IS PRESENTED IN THIS PAPER TO PROVIDE EDUCATORS WITH A BASIS FOR INTRODUCING SOME UNDERSTANDINGS OF POLITICS TO ELEMENTARY STUDENTS. THE POLITICAL SYSTEM IS DESCRIBED AS CONSTITUTING ALL SOCIAL PATTERNS OF INTERACTION THAT ARE MORE OR LESS RELATED TO THE MAKING OF BINDING DECISIONS FOR THE SOCIETY (THAT IS, THE AUTHORITATIVE ALLOCATION OF THINGS THAT ARE DESIRED OR SOUGHT AFTER BY PEOPLE IN THE SOCIETY). THE PATTERNS OF INTERACTION OF THE SYSTEM CONSIST OF SUCH THINGS AS VOTING, PARTIES, INTEREST GROUPS, ADMINISTRATION, A JUDICIARY, AND LEGISLATURES. THE ANALYSIS EMPHASIZES THE RELATIONSHIP OF THE POLITICAL SYSTEM TO ITS ENVIRONMENT. THE FOUR MAJOR DISCUSSION TOPICS ARE--(1) "DEMANDS," ONE OF THE TWO MAJOR INPUTS FROM THE SOCIETAL ENVIRONMENT INTO THE POLITICAL SYSTEM, (2) "OUTPUTS," THE DECISIONS MADE BY THE AUTHORITIES, (3) "SUPPORT" FOR THE POLITICAL SYSTEM, THE OTHER MAJOR INPUT, AND (4) "FEEDBACK," THE MEANS BY WHICH REACTIONS OF SOCIETY TO AUTHORITATIVE DECISIONS OR OUTPUTS ARE DRAWN BACK INTO THE INPUT CYCLE. THIS PAPER WAS WRITTEN AS PART OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCE EDUCATION CONSORTIUM, A CURRICULUM PROJECT DESIGNED TO OUTLINE THE CONCEPTS, STRUCTURE, AND METHODS OF SEVERAL OF THE SOCIAL SCIENCES FOR USE OF TEACHERS AND CURRICULUM WORKERS AT ALL GRADE LEVELS.
