AbstractA COMPARISON WAS MADE OF THE AMOUNT OF LEARNING IN AN ADULT EVENING CLASS ON CAMPUS WITH THAT OF AN EXPERIMENTAL CLASS WHICH ATTENDED SESSIONS ON CAMPUS AND SPENT TWO WEEKENDS AT A UNIVERSITY RESIDENTIAL CENTER. IT WAS EXPECTED THAT THE EXPERIMENTAL CLASS WOULD LEARN MORE AND EXPERIENCE POSITIVE CHANGES IN ATTITUDE AS COMPARED WITH THE CONTROL CLASS. THE SAME INSTRUCTORS WERE USED FOR BOTH GROUPS. IN ORDER TO CONTROL METHOD OF INSTRUCTION AS A VARIABLE, THE LECTURE-DISCUSSION METHOD WAS USED IN BOTH GROUPS. PRETESTS OF INTELLIGENCE, ATTITUDES, AND SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE WERE GIVEN TO ALL, AND ATTITUDE AND SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE TESTS WERE REPEATED AT THE END OF THE TERM. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP ALSO COMPLETED A FINAL EVALUATION QUESTIONNAIRE. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP WAS SIGNIFICANTLY MORE INTELLIGENT, BUT NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCES SHOWED UP IN EITHER THE PRETEST OR POST-TEST OF ATTITUDES OR SUBJECT KNOWLEDGE. THE EXPERIMENTAL GROUP ENJOYED THE SOCIAL SETTING AT THE RESIDENTIAL CENTER BUT DID NOT FEEL MORE LEARNING OCCURRED THERE. RATHER, THE PERIODS BETWEEN SESSIONS WERE SEEN AS DETERRENT TO LEARNING.
