AbstractA SERIES OF THREE CONFERENCES WAS HELD TO EXPLORE THE FEASIBILITY OF IMPLEMENTING A LONG-RANGE CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT PROJECT FOR AN UNGRADED, K-12 SCHOOL, BASED ON RECOMMENDATIONS OF THE CAMBRIDGE CONFERENCE ON SCHOOL MATHEMATICS. OVER 50 MATHEMATICIANS, MATHEMATICS EDUCATORS, AND PERSONS INVOLVED IN THEORETICAL AND APPLIED PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH, EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, AND ACADEMIC GAMES DEVELOPMENT PARTICIPATED. PRINCIPAL AREAS OF CONCERN IN THE PROJECT WERE--(1) CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT, (2) TEACHER TRAINING, (3) IMPLICATIONS OF LEARNING AND COGNITION THEORY, AND (4) RESEARCH AND EVALUATION. RESULTS OF THE CONFERENCES SUGGESTED THAT THE SUBJECT MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM COULD BEST BE DEVELOPED THROUGH AN EDUCATIONAL SYSTEMS APPROACH, USING BASIC FUNCTIONAL SYSTEM COMPONENTS OF INSTRUCTIONAL RESOURCES, SYSTEMS MODIFIERS, SYSTEMS ANALYSIS, DATA STORAGE AND PROCESSING, AN ACTION MONITOR, AND A VALUE ESTIMATOR. ADDITIONAL DISCUSSION CENTERED ON THE AREAS OF CURRICULUM CONTENT AND MATRICES, STUDENT GUIDES, AND AN INSERVICE TEACHER-TRAINING PROGRAM. IT WAS RECOMMENDED THAT A PILOT PROJECT BE CONDUCTED TO INVOLVE A SMALL PORTION OF THE SCHOOL POPULATION PRIOR TO OVERALL PROGRAM IMPLEMENTATION. (JH)
