AbstractThe suggestions and observations of Natsume Soseki in his lecture "Work and Pleasure" are applicable to the contemporary situation in Japan, in which students frequently complete their schooling without having attained the skills necessary to embark on careers in an increasingly tight labor market. In this essay, I will clarify how the views of Soseki regarding working, as illustrated in his 1911 lecture "Work and Pleasure," present an ideal picture of career education and how the necessity of introducing such views into contemporary Japanese schools should still be forcefully advocated. Finally, I will describe the types of experiences and knowledge that educators should offer students to guide them as they prepare to participate in the workforce.
