AbstractTwo groups of Italian secondary school pupils, resembling one another in all other respects, took part in an experiment on the effect of Esperanto instruction on their metalinguistic abilities. The group which studied Esperanto for a full school year achieved better results on independently developed tests of metalinguistic ability in comparison with the control group. Thus the results of the experiment are in keeping with initial hypotheses, namely that the teaching of Esperanto does indeed enhance the general metalinguistic skills of the pupils. The tests clearly show that at the beginning of the school year both groups were at the same level in both the "linguistic" and the "metalinguistic" responses to the questions. The questions in fact require responses in both categories: respondents must provide explanations for their linguistic responses. The results reinforce previous experiments on the propaedeutic effects of Esperanto, and underline the possible benefits of a bilingual education for all learners. Reasserting the validity of bilingual education for all pupils, the authors call for similar experiments with other age groups and with children with different native languages. (Verlag).
