Abstract | Education systems are shaped by the history of the nation they are intended to serve. This chapter discusses how education systems are constructed by either putting the nation center stage or rejecting such a construct all together. Rather than focusing solely on the system level or on the political level, this chapter also examines the individual level. The systems chosen as examples here are those of France and Canada, as these can be seen as opposed conceptions which exemplify how differently national identities can be constructed in the light of globalized and ongoing changes in citizenship.
