AbstractThis book is the first of two volumes that look at the changed landscape of higher education and the academic profession. This volume focuses on academic work, examining the significant changes that have taken place in the backgrounds, specialisations, expectations and work roles of academic staff. The academic profession is ageing, and becoming increasingly insecure, more accountable, more internationalised and less likely to be organised along disciplinary lines. The private sector is more prominent, expectations from society are different and increasing, professional roles are evolving, and there is a new devotion to knowledge. This leads to questions about the attractiveness of an academic career and the quest for greater relevance of research. This book discusses in detail the themes that are common in this changed arena, such as the context for change, the relation of teaching to research, research productivity, applied and commercial research, and the relevance of teaching and research. Contents: The Relevance of the Academy (William K. Cummings/Ulrich Teichler). - The Conditions of Continuity and the Drivers of Change (William K. Cummings). - Coping with the Crisis: Academic Work and Changes in Greek Higher Education (Antigoni Papadimitriou). - Changing Academic Identities in the Context of a Managerial University - Bridging the Duality Between Professions and Organizations (Liudvika Leisyte). - Teaching and Research in Binary Systems of Higher Education: Convergent or Distinctive Profiles? (Egbert de Weert). - The Teaching and Research Nexus from an International Perspective (Akira Arimoto). - Congeniality and Research Productivity in State-Professional-Market Driven Systems of Mass Higher Education (Gerard A. Postiglione/Jisun Jung). - Growth Behavior of Research Collaboration with Heterogeneous Colleagues and Research Commercial Activities in Korean Academics (Soo Jeung Lee). - Academics and Service to the Community: An International (European) Perspective (Bojana Culum). - Gender Differences in Research Scholarship Among Academics: An International Comparative Perspective (Jisun Jung). - The Academic Profession: The Dynamics of Emerging Countries (Monica Marquina/Mariela Ferreiro). - The Impact of Government Policies on the Profiles and Attitudes of Academics in Two Emerging Economies: Brazil and Mexico (Jorge Martínez Stack/Marion Lloyd/Imanol Ordorika). - The Transformation of the Production and Circulation of Knowledge and the Pedagogic Synergy: A Research Study on Three Argentine Universities (Graciela C. Riquelme). - The Latin American University Model and the Challenges Posed by the Reforms: Perspectives from the Academics (Elizabeth Balbachevsky) (HoF/text adopted).
