Abstract | The need for a well formed view of a what physically educated person might look like has emerged in recent years as an important issue in the justification of the subject in schools and has affected the request for more resources to deliver it. At least one European Minister of Education listened to the team preparing a new PE curriculum and requesting more resources and asked what students had learned in the approximately 1,000 hours of PE they had received during compulsory schooling years (based on an average of 3 physical education lessons per week for around 10-11 years). Effectively, the question is asking what does a physically educated person look like at the end of what has to be said is a substantial amount of teaching and learning time. This chapter explores the idea of a physically educated person through the findings of a EUPEA survey involving over 2,000 teachers in 20 countries - what they believe is a physically educated person and the extent to which it might be achieved.
