Abstract | This Adult Apprenticeship publication describes a specific apprenticeship programme developed in Finland. The programme is aimed at adults, emphasising concepts such as lifespan, tacit knowledge and the life experience adult learners have gathered over the years. One of the biggest working-life challenges in Europe is to prevent the weakening of economical growth caused by a decreasing working-age population. A key to economical growth, employment and social cohesion is intellectual capital, and, as population structures are changing, promoting adult learning as a part of life-time learning. Adult apprenticeship is a suitable option when resolving how to keep ageing staff in working-life. For employers, the apprenticeship and the skills demonstrations involved offer a cost-efficient option for updating the competence of their employees. The programme can also open whole new careers for middle-aged workers, therefore providing a alternative to early retirement. This publication is categorised into three main themes: Apprenticeship in the Finnish educational system, the best educational practises in adult apprenticeship, and the implementation and benefits of adult apprenticeship in working life.
