AbstractThis introductory contribution describes the growth of interest in the issue of continuing education and in-service training. It became evident in the growing number of workshops and seminars as well as "in numerous policy initiatives, reports and reforms designed to ensure a 'skilled workforce' or a 'learning workforce' that is able to withstand the fierce winds of competition unleashed as as result of global economic forces." It was that background against which the School of Continuing Education at the University of Leeds in England decided to organise a conference entitled "Researching Learning and Work" in September 1999. The main topics addressed during the conference are summarized and also the "absent voices" as there were the "voices from southern countries and from regions experiencing 'transitional' measures in post-communist economies" on the one hand and the voices of the employees - the subjects of many of the reported research activities - on the other hand are mentioned.
