Abstract	To ensure the effectiveness of the educational reforms, Central and East European countries, including Lithuania, have to rely on the knowledge of contemporary education. The aim of this paper is to reveal the role of Western universities in influencing the development of the young generation of researchers in education in Lithuania. Based on the experience of Lithuanian universities, as well as on the analysis of documents and data on Lithuanian higher education, the importance of links with Western universities in influencing the development of educational science and researchers is revealed. The study enabled to conclude that Lithuania faces the problems related to realisation of certain research conditions at doctoral studies. Lithuanian Educational Research Association, together with EERA which it recently joined, could make a significant contribution to the development of the new generation of researchers in Lithuania, as well as to the integration of the European academic community.
