Abstract | This report is the result of the research project "Europe in Education", which took place from January 1st 1992 to December 31st 1993. It begins with an outline of the Danish school system, focusing particular on aspects that may be of importance for cooperation with schools in other countries. Special emphasis is placed on both practical considerations and the basic values underlying Danish schools. The author seeks to show ... how the concept fits in with the Danish school tradition and the interests and needs of the pupils. The main part of the book consists of selected case-studies which describe what has actually taken place at a number of normal Danish schools from the mid-1980s to 1994, when the collection of experiences was concluded. The section "Main findings of the project" consists of an account of the aspects of teaching about Europe and experiences of transnational cooperation that are of greatest relevance for teachers and decision- makers. The conclusion offers a series of concrete proposals as to how a European dimension can be incorporated in education in accordance with the subsidiarity principle. Finally, the last section contains an outline of the SOCRATES programme, focusing in particular on the opportunities it offers teachers and pupils. (DIPF/orig.). |
