Abstract | "The introduction of modern compulsory education was a momentous event in contemporary societies.... Above all it constituted a democratization of learning that has never received the attention it deserves. Compulsory education, of course, had many facets: ideological, political, administrative, legislative and educational. This introductory study briefly considers them all in different settings and at different periods in time." The country studies in this volume are concerned with the Netherlands in the 19th and 20th century, in Italy after unification, in Spain 1900-1936, in Belgium 1830-1914, in Germany, in France (popular education in the 19th century), in Poland, the USA (teaching of virtue), in Canada and in Mexico 1920-1928.
