Abstract | Proceeding from the purpose and the tasks of UNESCO the author characterizes the role which this international organization is playing in the process of European integration. "In the present situation of continuously evolving combinations of stability and change", as the author emphasizes, "education is one of the major prerequisites for the promotion of social cohesion, democracy, respect for justice and law within society and for cooperation in the creation of a new Europe.... In promoting these objectives UNESCO will continue to provide varied and multiple assistance to countries in transition in reforming their educational systems, including cooperation in the preparation and/or comparative analysis of their educational laws. In the Europe Region, this will be done in close cooperation with the Council of Europe, the CEC and other partners, including professional organizations on a basis of complementarity and mutual reinforcement.
