| Abstract | "Popular education", the concept developed by Paulo Freire, is a method to educate "those left on the margins of society by discussing their daily lives and concerns... Methodologically, this implied creating an 'authentic dialogue between learners and educators as equally knowing subjects'. This pedagogical theory - commonly associated with the concept conscientization, or awareness-rising - focuses on the decodification of language for reaching a 'critical knowledge' of the speaker's reality". The article reviews the programme "Educación y Trabajo" which was implemented by the Church-backes "Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo de la Educación" (CIDE) in Chile. It is based "on a dual strategy of personal and vocational training for women and men. Lasting between 5 and 6 weeks it includes 192 hours of basic technical training and 36 hours of personal training, followed by 320 hours of on-the-job training". (DIPF/Bi.) |
