The book is organized around four broad topics. The four chapters of PART ONE explore the past, present, and future of higher education, focusing especially on the interplay between the West and the rest of the world. (1. Patterns in higher education development. - 2. The university as center and periphery. - 3. Twisted roots. The western impact on Asian higher education. - 4. The American academic model in comparative perspective.) The SECOND PART deals with teachers and students in the contemporary university. (5. An international academic crisis? The American professiorate in comparative perspective. - 6. Professors and politics. An international perspective. - 7. Student political activism. - 8. Student politics in the Third World.) The THIRD PART considers the relationships among academic systems worldwide - particularly exchanges of students and faculty ... . (9. Gigantic peripheries. India and China in the world knowledge system. - 10. The new internationalism. Foreign students and scholars. - 11. The foreign student dilemma.) The FINAL PART focuses on the newly industrializing countries as a special, and increasingly important, category of academic systems that are emerging as significant academic powers. (12.
